20+ Breast Cancer Foods, Herbs And Remedies



Breast cancer is the most common form of cancer and also the deadliest among women. The World Health Organization predicts that by 2020 the number of breast cancer cases will be much higher than it is today.

In fact, it is believed that in the coming few years, one in every eight women will be at risk of developing breast cancer in her lifetime. This figure has also been estimated by the Indian Council of Medical Research.

Breast cancer can be detected by several early symptoms, some of which include regular discharge from the nipple and nipples becoming inverted. Home remedies for breast cancer are available, not necessarily to cure breast cancer but to boost the immune system or kill the cancerous tissues to a certain extent. Still, proper lifestyle and eating habits are recommended for longevity and survival rate improvement of breast cancer patients.

A healthy diet can also reduce the risk of breast cancer to a great extent. Certain foods can help fight malignant cancer cells at the onset and thus help in preventing breast cancer.

 Soybean


This is one of the known dietary elements that are considered to be an absolute must for breast cancer patients.

It contains phytoestrogens and several other entities that block cancerous cells from using estrogen. It also contains isoflavones needed for the prevention of cancer at early stages. It can be taken either as sprouts or as a cooked vegetable.


Olive Oil



Olive oil ,known for its health benefits, reduces the risk of cancer. 
A recent research study suggests that hydroxytyrosol, a major component of olive oil may help prevent breast cancer in postmenopausal women.


Flax seed



Flax seed contains high levels of lignans that protect against estrogen-dependent cancers like breast cancer.

Flax seed and flax seed oil are among the few sources of the essential omega-3 fatty acid ALA, which forms a protective shield against cancer cells responsible for breast cancer.

Note : You can add powdered flax seed to yogurt to create a richer and nutty flavor. You can also add flax seed oil to salad dressings or integrate it into baked goods, such as cookies or muffins.

Turmeric And Curcumin 



The use of this spice in relation to cancer is one of the most thoroughly researched topics.

A number of laboratory studies on cancer cells suggest that curcumin does have anticancer effects. It seems to be able to fight cancer cells and prevent more from growing. It seems to be most effective against breast cancer, bowel cancer, stomach cancer and skin cancer cells.

Research has it that the combined treatment of curcumin with chemotherapy eliminated more bowel cancer cells than chemotherapy alone.

Other studies have also shown that curcumin interferes with cancer development, growth and spread. And researchers have reported that curcumin blocked the formation of cancer-causing enzymes in rodents.

Note: Evidence suggests that in general turmeric works well to help stop cancer in its tracks and is especially effective at helping to treat breast cancer, colon cancer and skin cancer.


Grapes


Grapes contain a compound called proanthocyanidins that reduces the body’s estrogen production. This results in the effective treatment of breast cancer, as is evident from the clinical trials performed on several breast cancer patients. 

The study showed that the extract of grapes affects breast cancer tumors that are hormone-sensitive. A drug called doxorubicin was also found to enhance its anti-tumor activity by consuming grapes juice or extract every day as a supplemental treatment.


Lignans Compounds




Lignans are present in the seeds of sunflower, cashews, strawberries, flax seed, and peanuts. These compounds prevent estrogen-dependent tumors by slowing down their rate of growth and progression. Any of these items can be incorporated in the daily diet chart and should be used as frequently as possible.


Vitamin D



Vitamin D intake has been associated with a lower risk of breast cancer. This can be found in milk, eggs, and cod liver oil, but not in cheese and yogurt.



Salmon



Salmon is an oily fish that contains a good amount of omega-3 fatty acids that slow the growth of cancerous tumors and boost the immune system. At the same time, salmon is a lean protein and a good source of vitamins B12 and D. All these elements provide the body with the nutrients required to regulate cell growth and prevent cancer.

You can eat salmon steamed, baked or grilled. For best results, eat three-ounce servings of fresh salmon two times a week. Along with salmon, other oily fishes that help prevent breast cancer are mackerel, sardines, trout, sea bass and tuna.


Garlic



It is well known that garlic has certain antibiotic properties which can be used to get rid of various infectious agents like bacteria, yeast, and fungi.

The presence of alkyl sulfur compounds makes it a very good anti-cancer agent. It does so by causing the malignant cells to undergo natural cell death, also known as apoptosis. It also plays an important role in activating the immune cells against cancerous cells.

It is advisable to eat garlic in raw form as an oil, clove or powdered substance, rather than consuming it in a cooked form.

Broccoli contains cancer-fighting compounds known as indole-3-carbinol that help alter estrogen metabolism and suppress breast tumor cell growth. They also protect against hormone-dependent cancers such as breast, cervix, and prostate cancer.

Eating one-half cup of broccoli daily can help protect against breast cancer. Raw broccoli supplies more health benefits than cooked broccoli. Along with broccoli, try to include other cruciferous vegetables like cabbage, kale and cauliflower in your diet.


Tomatoes




Tomatoes contain lycopene, a powerful antioxidant that can prevent the development of breast cancer by stopping cancer cell growth. According to the American Institute for Cancer Research, lycopene also stops tumor growth by interfering with abnormal cell growth.

Lycopene is also beneficial in stopping other types of cancer cells from growing, including those involved in lung and endometrial cancer.

To enjoy the benefits, you can eat cooked, concentrated or processed tomatoes. However, the best option is to drink a half glass of tomato juice daily.

A study published in the Endocrine Society’s Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism indicates that a diet rich in tomatoes may help protect postmenopausal women from breast cancer.



Green Tea



Green tea has anti-inflammatory properties and is very effective against breast cancer formation.
Prepare herbal green tea by boiling some amount of tea leaves in a glass of water till it reduces to half.

Blueberries are also rich in antioxidants like ellagic acid which have anti-cancer properties.

To reap the most benefits from blueberries, eat them fresh instead of the packaged versions. Along with blueberries, other berries that can prevent breast cancer are strawberries, raspberries, blackberries and cranberries.



Calcium




It is important to consume calcium, especially in the pre-menopausal period for women. It has been shown to reduce breast cancer risk in a number of different studies. Foods rich in calcium are canned salmon, orange juice, almonds and green vegetables.

Research has found that pomegranate contains natural compounds like urolithin B that suppress estrogen prevent the growth of hormone-responsive breast cancer tumors.

 It is also packed with polyphenols like ellagic acid with antioxidant properties that reduce the effect of estrogen in promoting the growth of breast cancer.

Pomegranate makes a delicious and healthy addition to any fruit salad and many fruit desserts. You can include pomegranate in any breast cancer prevention diet, in either fruit or juice form. It is believed that the juice has a higher concentration of antioxidants than the fruit.
